"Great doctors treat illnesses before they occur" – Furthermore, to diagnose and treat present illnesses, TCM excel in preventive medicine as well. This indicate that through TCM's diagnostic methods, potential illnesses can be detected prior to their full development. TCM preventive medicine is primarily achieved through the four diagnostic methods of TCM: observation, listening and smelling, inquiry, and pulse-taking. When an emerging illness is identified, preventive treatment can be applied using TCM methods to cease the illness progression.
